Edinburgh has a temperate maritime climate, relatively mild comparing with other cities of the same latitude. The proximity of the sea has soothing effect, preventing any drastic temperature changes. The influence of Gulf Stream causes warm west winds. The weather is very changeable, the expression "four seasons in a day" refers to it perfectly.

The location between sea and mountains makes Edinburgh a windy city with the prevailing southwest directions. It can cause rainfall, though the city is far less rainy than, for example, Glasgow. Edinburgh has lower annual precipitation than most cities of the southeast coast. East winds are usually drier but colder. Rainfall is distributed almost evenly all over the year, Atlantic depressions can cause windstorms between October and March.

Spring begins in March and lasts until the end of May. It is generally warm, with periods of sunny days. Sometimes morning is cold and windy, and the afternoon is warm, summer-like. In May the temperature rises steadily, making this time the most pleasant to visit the city.

Summer has mainly fine, sunny weather, but the temperature is not likely to rise over 21-22°C. Summer maximum of 30°C was recorded in 2003. Heavy rains and windstorms are unlikely.

Autumn begins from the middle of September, with gradually falling temperature and rising precipitation. September and early October are quiet and clear, being the ideal time to visit the city. Winter can be felt already in early November, lasting until March. It has bright, clear and often cold days, though temperature rarely falls below zero.
