Edinburgh has a temperate maritime climate, relatively mild comparing with other cities of the same latitude. The proximity of the sea has soothing effect, preventing any drastic temperature changes. Edinburgh has lower annual precipitation than most cities of the southeast coast. East winds are usually drier but colder. Rainfall is distributed almost evenly all over the year, Atlantic depressions can cause windstorms between October and March.

Spring begins in March and lasts until the end of May. It is generally warm, with periods of sunny days. Sometimes morning is cold and windy, and the afternoon is warm, summer-like. In May the temperature rises steadily, making this time the most pleasant to visit the city.
